Best on: polyester microfiber, including waffle — sublimation dyes the fiber itself so the print doesn't crack or peel
Struggles on: cotton — sublimation needs polyester to bond to, so cotton requires screen printing, which sits on top and eventually cracks
Cost: lower per unit at volume, effectively free extra colors with sublimation
Detail limit: excellent; photographs and gradients are fine

Short version: microfiber or waffle towel → print it. Cotton or premium caddy towel → embroider it.

What it costs (in bands, because quotes move)

Rather than quote numbers that will be stale, here's how pricing behaves:

Setup fees are the thing that punishes small orders. Embroidery has a digitizing fee (one-time, per design). Screen printing has a per-color screen fee. Sublimation usually has little or no setup, which is why it wins for small runs.
Per-unit price drops hard between 12 and 144 units, then flattens. If you're ordering 60, ask what 72 costs — it's sometimes less in total.
Towel quality is the biggest lever on final price, more than the decoration. A 300 GSM promo towel and a 600 GSM waffle towel with the same logo can differ by 3x.
Rush fees are real and typically 25–50%. Order six weeks out.

Artwork: the three things that get orders bounced

Vector files. Send .ai, .eps, or .svg. A logo pulled off a website at 400px will be rejected or will print blurry. If all you have is a JPG, pay someone to vectorize it — it's a small one-time cost.
Minimum text size. Embroidery can't hold text below roughly 0.25 inches tall. Printing can go smaller but stitching cannot. Simplify the logo before someone else simplifies it badly for you.
Color specification. Give Pantone numbers. "Our blue" is not a color.

Ordering for a tournament or outing

This is where most custom towel orders happen, and where the avoidable mistakes cluster.

Order for players, not for the field size. A 144-player scramble does not need 144 towels if 30 people will leave theirs on the cart. Order the field count for towels — they're one of the few items people genuinely take home — but be ruthless about the rest of the bag.

Pick a towel people would buy. The single biggest determinant of whether a tournament towel gets used is whether it's a decent towel. A 250 GSM promo square with a sponsor logo goes in a drawer. A 500 GSM waffle towel with a tasteful mark gets carried for years — and carries the logo with it, which is the actual objective.

Sponsor logo placement. Corner, small, one color. A towel that's 40% sponsor logo is a billboard, and people don't carry billboards.

Timeline: artwork approved 6 weeks out, proof approved 4 weeks out, delivery 1 week out. Build in the buffer; decoration shops miss dates.

Get a physical proof for any order over about 50 units. Screen colors lie.

What to look for in a blank

The decorator will offer you a range of blanks. The spec that matters:

400–600 GSM — below that you're buying a rag
Waffle weave if it's going to be used for clubs, flat microfiber if it's mostly a giveaway
Attachment included — grommet and carabiner, center hole, or magnets. A towel with no way to attach it to a bag is a kitchen towel with a logo.
Tri-fold sizing (16x24 or larger) reads as more premium than a 15x15 square for roughly the same money
